It’s important to us as a school community to come together as one extended whānau, to celebrate and share in our school highlights and successes, big or small. We consider these special moments essential opportunities to connect with our students and their families, to build on our school values and to promote our school spirit and character. We are very proud of this special place we call Onekiritea.
Celebrating School Spirit
Whole School, Sport and Cultural Assemblies are a special feature of Hobsonville School. They are a time when we all come together to share the special spirit and character of our school. It promotes our students’ many talents and celebrates our student successes. Parents are welcome to join us, they are held in our auditorium and are advertised on our digital notice board, in newsletters and the mid week notices.
The biggest event on our school calendar – our wonderful end of year picnic evening – is a combined effort organised by our teachers, children and ‘Whānau & Friends’ parent committee. All our families and wider school community are invited to bring a picnic and join in the festivities. Our students and teachers entertain with fun performances, along with our cultural groups. Plus there’s plenty of other activities, prizes to win and yummy food to purchase.
Most Thursday afternoons our entire school gathers in their Whare Groups – Maunga, Awa, Waka and Kāinga from 2.30pm to 3.00pm in the auditorium. At this time you will see our older students supporting our young students while sitting in their whare groups. This is a time where we speak Te Reo, hear the history of our area and sing together.
On Friday mornings the whole school congregates outside on the front courts to share our school karakia to celebrate the day, honour our heritage by singing the New Zealand Anthem and perform our school haka and waiata together. It is a time to celebrate and reflect on the school week and come together as a school community. Parents are most welcome to join us.
