If your family is new to our Hobsonville School community, we offer a range of orientation programmes to help you and your child settle easily and happily into school life.
Settling into school life at Hobsonville
Parents are encouraged to make an appointment to meet and have an informal chat with either the Principal or Deputy Principal’s. It’s an opportunity to get to know you and your child, where you can ask questions and have a brief tour of the school. You’ll also be given a ‘starter pack’ with lots of helpful information.
NEW ENTRANTS
We understand that starting on the ‘school journey’ is both unsettling and exciting for our new families. To help new entrants settle into school life we offer an opportunity, prior to their school start date, to meet their teacher and classmates with their parent or caregiver. These transition sessions are held on two consecutive Friday mornings, from 9.00am to 11.00am, (preferably in school uniform) in their learning space. Parents must stay with their child for these sessions. It’s a great way to become familiar with the morning programme, meet the other students and speak to your child’s teachers if you have questions.
NEW STUDENTS
The parents of new students starting at Hobsonville School, attend a short information morning led by the Principal, Learning Leader and Deputy Principal. The students are then taken to their new learning space to meet their teachers and peers. We know that transitioning to school or starting a new school can be a big step for any child, so we aim to make the process as simple, seamless and as undaunting as possible.
All parents and students have an opportunity to meet with their year teacher in the learning space, on the first day of term 1 of the new school year. It’s the perfect time to ask any questions you may have and for our student’s to get acquainted with their peers and learning space. Students are welcome to bring in their labelled and named stationery packs, in preparation for the first learning day.
To accommodate all our parents, there are three booking sessions available. Each session begins with meeting all teachers who will be teaching in your child’s space. This is important as many classes are taught collaboratively. The teachers will then speak about the learning and expectations in their area and this will be followed by a friendly ‘meet and greet’.
In the last week of term 4, all students are shown to their newly assigned learning space for the following school year. Here, they spend the morning with their future teacher and classmates in a fun and welcoming way. New students to the school can attend this morning so that they too can meet their teacher and become familiar with the learning space. It’s a great opportunity to meet new friends, put faces to names and play some games getting to know one another. Stationery lists for the following year are handed out to the students to take home.
We hold an open day for parents in terms 1, 2 and 3. Each term has a different curriculum focus and parents are encouraged to come and see our teaching practice in action. You’ll be notified in advance about the details of the day.
Visitors are welcomed onto our school with a traditional powhiri (welcome) and waiata (songs) led by our talented students.
Every so often, we celebrate our learning by holding evenings where student lead and showcase their learning. Our students and their teachers work hard to prepare for these events and community attendance makes these evening even more special. Families (including grandparents) are all welcome!
Around the middle of the year, we hold an open day for Year 6 students (and parents / caregivers), who are interested in going to Hobsonville School for their intermediate years (Year 7–8). Here, your child can meet the senior teachers, speak to the senior students and get a feel for what they can expect to experience in their intermediate years.
Our Year 8 intermediate students have opportunities to visit Hobsonville Point Secondary School and Massey High School for secondary school orientation days. Massey High School conducts pre-assessment with Year 8 students and keeps in touch to discuss the results with the current Year 8 teachers.
