Here at Hobsonville, we’re big believers in the many benefits that sports participation provides children of all ages. Both individual and collaborative (team) sports create environments for students to prepare for events, experience failure and success, essentially developing a growth mindset. We pride ourselves on involving students in a wide variety of sports, catering to many different interests.
Growing great, well-rounded Kiwis
At Hobsonville School we value the important role that sport plays in shaping our students attitudes and mindsets. Not only does it teach important life values and skills, it also keeps their minds and bodies physically fit and active. As such we offer our students a multitude of opportunities to experience a range of different sports that challenge, build resilience, improve co-ordination and strengthen abilities.

– ENJOYING ‘SPORT LIFE’ AT HOBSONVILLE SCHOOL! OUR STUDENTS ARE VERY FORTUNATE TO BE ABLE TO ‘TRY THEIR HAND’ AT A VARIETY OF SPORTS.
Hobsonville School participates in a number of Auckland based out-of-school sports leagues, available for all our students (Yrs 0–8), across the school year. They are very popular and we recommend them as a way for our students to get involved in safe, friendly team sport. However, our teams do require parents to step-up and help out where they can, with both coaching and managing, so if you have time to give to our students please contact our out-of-sports leader. We often have keen parents, who have not played any sport, mentoring their child’s aspiring sports team, guidance from the school and sports league can be available if this is the case.
To sign up and secure your child a place in a team, simply:
- LOGIN TO: KINDO Shop >
- SELECT: ‘OPTIONAL Sports Activities’ and your child’s sport choice,
- REGISTER: and make payment,
- READ AND SIGN: the SPORTS CODE OF CONDUCT (parents, players and coaches),
- SUPPLY: important medical information to the school for your child.
Simply fill out and return a: STUDENT MEDICINE & ACTION PLAN FORM >

Hobsonville School Sports Days
CROSS COUNTRY
Hobsonville’s Cross Country is held every August in the school grounds. One day each is allocated for the Junior School (Yrs 0–4) and for the Senior School (Yrs 5–8). The whole school trains prior to the event during the school day, then competes in their relevant age group. The first 5-8 students to finish in each division (Yrs 5–8) then represent Hobsonville at the inter-school championships held at Muriwai.
ATHLETICS
Our Athletics Day is held in November, term 4. Students get opportunities to practice all the events before the actual competition day (running, high jump, long jump, shot put), learning to focus on technique while developing resilience. The Junior Athletics Day is held at school while the Senior Athletics Day is at Moire Park. The students in Years 7 and 8 who place in the top 2–3 positions, represent our school at the Norwest athletics competition.
SWIMMING
We regard ‘learning to swim’ as an important and integral part of our school and the New Zealand lifestyle. Utilising both our own pool and the local Hilton Brown facilities, our students have access year round to learning vital swimming skills for life. The School Swimming Sports Day is held in term 1 at Massey High School.
Inter-school Sports Days
Throughout the year, students have many opportunities to represent our school at Inter-School Sports fixtures in West and North Auckland. Trials for the teams are advertised in the Student RRAP news and school newsletters. Once trials have been conducted, the team is coached before the start of the sports tournament. This preparation helps our students to be the BEST they can be.
We compete in:
SWIMMING | CRICKET | HOCKEY | NETBALL |
SOCCER | TOUCH RUGBY | SEVENS RUGBY | CROSS COUNTRY |
BADMINTON | ORIENTEERING | VOLLEYBALL | SOFTBALL |
AIMS Games (Yrs 7–8)
AIMS Games are a New Zealand inter-school tournament held over five days in Tauranga every year during early September. Open to our Year 7 and 8 students, it represents many sports disciplines. Hobsonville School has competed in basketball, football, table tennis and gymnastics.
Getting to and staying at the games requires the support of dedicated students, parents, coaches and teachers for both training and fundraising. This environment provides a rich learning experience that will forever be fondly remembered by all those who participate.
